Equipment & Safety
Minimum requirements for fell walking are strong footwear (preferably comfortable boots to protect the ankles), a rucksack, warm clothing (including an additional warm layer), waterproofs, map, compass, whistle, torch, first aid kit (including pain relief), and sufficient food and drink. The torch is in case of emergencies in the dark. Stay with your group at all times and let people know if you need to go to the toilet. Please wear appropriate clothing, i.e. no denim.
In general, members of the A and A+ groups which venture onto the higher fells are expected to carry additional equipment appropriate to the type of terrain. The time of year should also be taken into account. In summer, additional fluids should be carried; in winter, additional layers of clothing, etc.
A club First Aid Kit and Survival Tent is carried on each of the walks. The club First Aid Kit contains:
Members and guests out on walks must participate in one of the organised walks as this means that they are covered by Public Liability Insurance. Walkers should stay with their leader. Getting ahead or falling behind means that you may take a wrong turning, or cause the group to straggle too much. If by any chance you get separated from your party and cannot see them within five minutes, blow your whistle. Stay where you are and call the Club phone number (07340 171182) and the leader's number if you have it. The leader will retrace their steps. Call numbers rather than text as the text may not be picked up. The Club’s mobile phone is left on the coach so that contact can be maintained with the rest of the club.
At the leader's discretion, a group may leave an organised party, for example in an emergency, but for safety's sake the proposed route must be identified and the people concerned should remain as a group.
The club aims to provide additional map-reading and navigational skills training opportunities. Details of these will be posted on the Events page.
Please follow the Country Code. Take all your litter home. Close gates after you unless they were open to begin with. Our right to access the countryside and farmers' lands depends upon treating it with respect.
Insurance is available for hikers if required (see e.g. moneysupermarket.com to find a policy that suits you).
For reasons of safety, no dogs please.
