Equipment & Safety
Minimum requirements for fell walking are strong footwear (preferably comfortable boots to protect the ankles), rucksack, warm clothing (including an additional warm layer), waterproofs, map, compass, whistle, torch, first aid kit, and sufficient food and drink (including emergency rations such as nuts, fruit or chocolate). The torch is to see your way if you get benighted, and also to use as a signal. Six long flashes with a torch or six long blasts on a whistle signal an emergency. You may wish to carry a survival bag if you are going on the high fells. The wearing of denim is discouraged as once it is wet, it stays wet.
In general, members of the A and A+ groups which venture onto the higher fells would be expected to carry additional equipment appropriate to the type of terrain. The time of year should also be taken into account. In summer, additional fluids should be carried; in winter, additional layers of clothing, etc.
Under Government Guidelines it is now possible for up to 30 people belonging to clubs or groups to begin to meet again in Covid-19 secure venues. To protect you and your walking companions from Coronavirus please maintain the 2 metres apart rule and minimise touching gates and stiles and handling walking poles of other members of the group. Carry hand sanitiser with you for use when necessary and a face mask for use if an emergency occurs. Take care to maintain a safe distance from other walkers. Please do not come on the walks if you or anyone in your household has shown any symptoms of Coronavirus within 14 days before the walk. For additional precautions to take due to Coronavirus, please see Risk Assessment for Group Walks on The Ramblers Association Coronavirus Advice page.
A club First Aid Kit and Survival Tent is carried on each of the four walks. The club First Aid Kit contains:
Members and guests out on walks must participate in one of the organised walks as this means that they are covered by Public Liability Insurance. Walkers should stay with their leader. Getting ahead means you may take a wrong turning, or cause the group to straggle too much. If by any chance you get separated from your party and are unable to meet the coach at its agreed parking place within reasonable time (say one hour) please inform the police so that they can let us know what has happened. The Club’s mobile phone (07765 457521) is left on the coach so that contact can be maintained with the rest of the club.
At the leader's discretion, a group may leave an organised party, for example to cut the walk short, but for safety sake the proposed route must be identified and the people concerned should remain as a group.
The club aims to provide additional map-reading and navigational skills training opportunities. Details of these will be posted on the Events page.
Please follow the Country Code. Take all your litter home. Close gates after you unless they were open to begin with. Our right to access the countryside and farmers' lands depends upon treating it with respect.
Members are strongly advised to arrange their own insurance cover in respect of the Club's activities.
For reasons of safety, no dogs please.
